Are Purple Hybrids a Good Mattress?

Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). Only the difference between these mattresses is the amount of Purple’s special grid-layer included in each. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches

The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.

The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.

Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.

Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.

These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Purple mattresses might not appeal to couples.

You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.

If you’re trouble sleeping at night, a memory foam mattress might be a better fit. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses

Purple 2 Hybrid MattressNext up, let’s get into what these bed-in-a-box hybrids actually feel like. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.

As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.

Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.

Purple Hybrid: This mattress was quite firm so I gave it a 7 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. As the polymer layer on this mattress is thin enough to support a smooth spine, I believe stomach and back sleeping would be most benefited.

Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.

Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. I think these folks will really appreciate the pressure-relieving feel of this mattress.

Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.

Before I wrap up this section, I wanted to mention that all three Purple Hybrids had a responsive, bouncy feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Are Purple Hybrids Good for Light Sleepers (under 130lb)?

Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.

The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.

Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)

Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for them, as it provides both pressure relief and support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.

Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.

Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).

Heavy Back Sleepers – I’d recommend these sleepers stick to the Premier 3, which is thick enough to be durable, but won’t feel overly soft.

Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.

Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief

Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.

Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.

Pressure relief is one of the benefits of Purple Hybrids.

Back Pain Based on these results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best choice for people with back pain. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.

Shoulder Pain – Based on these results all three of these beds would be a great fit for anyone suffering from shoulder problems. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.

Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples

Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.

I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.

The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.

Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Sex

The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.

My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.

However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.

Cooling

The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.

Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.

This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Edge Support

Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Edge support can make your mattress seem larger, as you can spread across its entire surface.

All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.

Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?

Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy, purple top layer that gives the Purple mattresses their unique feel.

Below I’ll detail the grid as well as all of the mattress layers. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.

Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.

Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.

A look at The Purple Grid.

Next is a layer of transition foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.

Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing

Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid is a little easier to lift than the Premier models, I would recommend having a friend help you unbag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.

My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.

Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.

I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. They don’t trap body heat and should therefore be comfortable for most hot sleepers. The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds will be easy to adjust for combination sleepers.

I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. You will find it to be extremely comfortable, especially if you go for the thicker models. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints

Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.

A few customers complained that the Purple mattress was sagging and creating indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. What is the difference between the original Purple Hybrid mattress and the Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses?

The only thing that makes these mattresses different is the amount Purple Grid that they are made from.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 2-inch grid grid layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 3-inch grid Layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 4 uses a 4-inch grid Layer.

Where are Purple mattresses manufactured?

All Purple mattresses are made in the USA.

Can I use the Purple Hybrid Mattresses with a Box Spring?

Purple does not recommend the use of a boxspring in any of their beds.

They suggest using a solid platform base, slatted bed frame, or adjustable base.

Purple Hybrids Vs.

Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.

Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.

I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid for couples and back sleepers.

Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid

Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.

The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.

The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Purple 2 Hybrid Mattress

Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple

Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.

The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This feeling might be particularly appealing to those who sleep in combination.

The Original Purple mattress can be used in conjunction with the Purple Hybrids to cool down.

The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
