We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? Price Purple Mattress
These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Mattress Video Review
Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?
Purple was founded in 2015. It has become one of the most loved bedding brands thanks to its quirky advertisements and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
These beds should be enjoyed by combination sleepers! Price Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
You might find a better choice if you are easily disturbed at nights. Price Purple Mattress
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. Referring to your reference, I am 5’9″, 125 lbs and prefer to sleep on the side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Back sleepers should enjoy the feel of the Purple Hybrid.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4, I gave this mattress a 6 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Price Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I believe the Hybrid Premier 3 is an excellent choice for light back sleepers. It should fill in their lumbar areas for pressure relief and also provides plenty of support for those who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. Price Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Price Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach sleepers – These beds are not recommended for heavy stomach sleepers. They require a firmer bed to provide the best support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Price Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks the force that my body exerts on the map as I move about the bed and creates a colored “map of pressure”. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Prime 4 is the clear winner in hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. Price Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Price Purple Mattress
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids have a remarkable cooling effect.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Price Purple Mattress
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. Although I could feel the purple grid layer compressing under my weight the foam and coils underneath remained firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Price Purple Mattress
What is the Purple Hybrid?
Let’s find out what these beds look like! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. Price Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Unboxing And Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! The Purple Hybrid models are very responsive. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
Finally, I really like the feel of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. Price Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Price Purple Mattress

Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Price Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
