In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. These mattresses were reviewed in detail by me. I assessed how they felt, their construction, and whether they are supportive of certain types of sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches
The beds are all different in terms of how much pressure they provide, but the overall experience is pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.
These beds will appeal to combination sleepers. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. On Purple Mattress Commercial
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below I will describe how it felt to sleep on each of the Purple Hybrid models. You should keep in mind that the feeling of sleep is subjective and can vary depending on your preferences and body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. I’d recommend this mattress to side sleepers or side combination sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. These mattresses are among the best for combination sleepers. Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?
Light Back Sleepers- The Hybrid Premier 3 will work well for light back sleepers. This hybrid should provide pressure relief in the lumbar regions and be supportive for people who are lighter. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. It’s an especially nice choice if you move between positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers: The Premier 4 is a good choice for heavy side-sleepers. Its thick grid layer provides plenty of space for sinkage, and its soft feel should be comfortable for these folks.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue indicates areas of low pressure and red indicates areas of high pressure.
The Purple Hybrids’ pressure relief results.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. Blue across the board, but not around the lower back like the Premier 3 or 4 maps. This means that the original Hybrid is supporting my weight evenly, which is key to avoiding back problems.
Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.
Motion transfer refers the amount that is detectable in the bed from one side to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To illustrate motion transfer I dropped a 10lb steel ball from heights 4-8, 8 and 12 inches. The disturbance it created was measured.
Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
These mattresses are so bouncy that I am not surprised they offer little motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. On Purple Mattress Commercial
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
Below, I will detail the grid and the various mattress layers. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is bouncy, supportive, and incredibly cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid used 2 inches of Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 and Hybrid Premier 4 use 3 inches and 4 respectively. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next up, you’ll land on a layer of poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.
Support Layer This section is found in both Hybrid Premier as well as Hybrid Premier. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.
Let’s take a look at some of the materials used to make the Purple Hybrid layers. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. While the original Purple Hybrid is not as difficult to lift, it’s still worth having someone nearby to help you bag it. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. And though I can’t make that decision for you, I can leave you with a few final thoughts to help you get there on your own.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds are great for couples who want to change their positions.
The Purple Grid is a great feeling. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. On Purple Mattress Commercial
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
Purple mattresses do not have the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. On Purple Mattress Commercial

Purple Hybrid vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
It does however have a more traditional feel to it than any Purple beds. So, this could work for those who aren’t keen on Purple’s unique feel.
The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper’s zoned support is unlike the Purples. It is firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders, providing optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more bouncier than Casper Hybrids, which combination sleepers may appreciate.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. On Purple Mattress Commercial
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
