We’ll be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier, and Purple Hybrid Premier beds. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. The specs sound fascinating, but is this bed comfortable? New Purple Mattress Review
To find out, these mattresses received a thorough review. I evaluated how they were constructed, how they feel and how they support specific sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only difference is the amount of Purple’s special grid layer in each bed. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. You can find out more about which model is best suited to you by taking a look at the table below.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
For back sleepers who prefer a firmer feeling, the Purple Hybrid is the best choice. Those who need a little more pressure relief may choose the Purple Premier.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. New Purple Mattress Review
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.
Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. New Purple Mattress Review
How Firm are Purple Hybrid mattresses?
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.
Purple Hybrids and the mattress firmness.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. When compared to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness, it’s clear that this mattress is going to work best for those who like a more supportive feel. Because the polymer layer is thin enough for a consistent spinal line, stomach and back sleepers will benefit most.
Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress supported my pressure points well and provided a good amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. New Purple Mattress Review
Are Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Pounds)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.
Light Stomach sleepers – I would recommend they stick to the original Purple Hybrid. They should have their hips aligned with each other. New Purple Mattress Review
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Average Weight Sleepers (130 – 250 lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a great choice for these people. The thick layer of hyperelastic polymer on the top allows for plenty of pressure relief at the shoulders, hips, and hips.
Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. New Purple Mattress Review
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. New Purple Mattress Review
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
It sounds complicated but it’s really quite easy. All I have to do is roll the gadget out and get on board. The map does the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To relieve pressure, they should cushion the shoulder area.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is nearly completely blue, which means that sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout night. New Purple Mattress Review
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.
The motion transfer results of Purple Hybrids are impressive.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. New Purple Mattress Review
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. These beds are also great for cooling down.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. New Purple Mattress Review
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattress had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
I personally thought that the Purple Premier 3 provided the best edge support. New Purple Mattress Review
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover All these mattresses feature a breathable and stretchy polyester blend mattress cover.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The Hybrid Premier 3 Purple uses 3 Inches of Grid and the Hybrid Premier 4 4 Inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at the Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple includes complimentary white glove delivery when you order the Hybrid Premier models. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. Even though I can’t make the decision for you, here are some thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap too much heat, so most people who are hot should feel comfortable on them. I love the responsiveness of Purple Hybrids. Combination sleepers will have no trouble changing their positions on these beds.
The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you are looking for a unique look, the Purple may be right for you. New Purple Mattress Review
My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. New Purple Mattress Review

Purple doesn’t recommend using a Box Spring with any of its beds.
They recommend using a solid base, a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Leesa Hybrid combines foam layers with pocketed coils for a one-two punch of pressure relief and support.
But it is more traditional than any Purple bed, so it could work for those who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 and Purple 4 have a little more pressure relief than the Casper Hybrid. New Purple Mattress Review
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer is made of high-density poly foam instead of pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. Combination sleepers may particularly enjoy this feeling.
Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.
The Original Purple costs less than either Purple Hybrid Premier (or Purple Hybrid Premier).
