In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. These beds sound intriguing, but I am not sure if they are comfortable. To find out, I gave these mattresses a thorough review, assessing how they’re built, how they feel, and how well they support certain sleepers.

Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It offers three types of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
Hot sleepers should appreciate how cooling each of these mattresses are.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Mattress Topper Purple
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.
They are so lively, it is likely that you will feel your partner turning and tossing at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Mattress Topper Purple
What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let’s see how these bed-ina-box hybrids actually feel. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
The Purple Hybrids on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid – I found this mattress to have a very firm feel, so I gave it 7/10 on the mattress firmness rating. This mattress will be more supportive than the industry standard of 6.5, which is for medium firmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier4: This bed scored a 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Mattress Topper Purple
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. Either of the other hybrids could also work for these sleepers.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Mattress Topper Purple
Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?
Average Weight Back Sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is a nice fit for these sleepers, since it combines the pressure relief and support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Mattress Topper Purple
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250 lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. These people will find the Premier 4 comfortable due to its thick grid layer that allows for lots of sinkage.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend these beds for heavy stomach sleepers. They will need a firmer, more supportive mattress. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Mattress Topper Purple
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. A pressure map is a great way to test this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Mattress Topper Purple
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances for Couples
Couples love beds that can isolate motion transfer, allow for sex while also being responsive enough for sex. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
I dropped a steel ball weighing 10 lbs from heights of 4, 8 and 12 inches. This was to demonstrate motion transfer.
The Purple Hybrids’ motion transfer results.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. What this tells me is that you’re likely to feel movement across all three mattresses, which means they may not be the best fit for couples, especially if one partner is easily disturbed at night. Mattress Topper Purple
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
But if you’re not easily disturbed at night, they could be nice options for sex thanks to their lift and mobility.
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news especially for couples, as they tend to heat up faster than solo sleepers. Mattress Topper Purple
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.
Personally, I found the Purple Premier 3 to have the best edge support. Mattress Topper Purple
What are the Purple Hybrids Made of?
Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.
Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The grid is more dense, so the mattress feels more pressure-relieving.
The Purple Grid.
Next is a layer of transition foam. This transition foam works to ease the sleeper down through the soft top grid and onto the sturdier pocketed coil system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.
The Purple Hybrid is made up of layers of different materials. Mattress Topper Purple
Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
The Final Thoughts on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. We’re now at the end. It’s time for you to decide if these mattresses are right for your needs. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.
I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. Mattress Topper Purple
My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints
I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. Even though this isn’t an issue, if you are sensitive to motion, a traditional memory mattress might be a better choice.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Mattress Topper Purple

These experts recommend using a solid platform, slatted or adjustable bed frame.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s take a deeper look at the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Now let’s compare them to other models on the internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.
However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Mattress Topper Purple
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layer consists of high-density, poly foam rather than pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is less expensive than either the Purple Hybrid or Purple Hybrid Premier.
