Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It sells three varieties of hybrid mattresses: the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 or Purple Hybrid Premier 4 and the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. The only difference between these beds is how much of Purple’s special grid layer is included in each. Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
The coolness of these mattresses is something that hot sleepers will appreciate.

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.

What is the Firmness of Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Next, let us get into how these bed in a box hybrids feel. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Keep in mind that feel is subjective, and can change depending on your body type and preferred sleep position. For reference, I’m 5’9″, about 125 lbs, and prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.

Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3 : I gave the bed a 6.5 rating on the firmness scale. It had a medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel comfortable to combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would suit side sleepers or side combo sleepers. This mattress’ pressure relieving qualities will be appreciated by side sleepers and side combination sleepers.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. For these sleepers, any one of the hybrids may also be suitable.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. Side sleepers will find it offers excellent pressure relief.

Are Purple Hybrids good mattresses for average weight sleepers (130-250 lb)
Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. You can move from one position to another at night, making it a good choice.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. Its thick, top layer of hyper elastic polymer gives you plenty of pressure relief at your hips and shoulders.

Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers: I recommend that these sleepers stick with the Premier 3. It is thick enough for durability, but not too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers-The Premier 4 is a great choice for those who are heavy sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. King Size Purple Mattress Dimensions
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pain relief is closely tied to pressure relief, which is a measure of how well a bed is able to alleviate tension at the shoulders, hips, and lower back. I use a pressure map to check for this.
Although it sounds complicated, the process is really simple. You just need to roll the device and then get onboard. The gadget tracks my movements on the bed and generates a colored map of the pressure. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.
The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.
Back Pain Based off these pressure map results, we believe that the original Purple Hybrid will be the best option for back pain sufferers. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based upon these results, all three beds are great choices for those suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner if you suffer from hip pain. Its pressure map appears almost entirely blue, which indicates that it will be used to cradle sensitive hip joints throughout the night. King Size Purple Mattress Dimensions

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. You can read on to see how Purple Hybrids stack in these areas.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is when there is motion between the two sides of a bed. This is an important aspect for everyone, but it’s especially important for couples and people who share a bed with their child or furry friend.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.

These mattresses are quite bouncy, so it’s not surprising they don’t offer much motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. Sex
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
Cooling
All Purple Hybrids offer incredible cooling.
These beds are great for hot sleepers. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.

Edge Support
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
I thought all three Purple mattresses had good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer compress under my weight, but the foam and coils below stayed firm and supportive.

What is the Purple Hybrid?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is supportive, bouncy and extremely cooling. Although it is difficult to describe the feel of this polymer material, it can be compared to a waterbed in that it supports your body and moves with you. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.

Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam is used to help the sleeper get through the soft top grid, and on to the stronger pocketed coils system below.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs are very bouncy and help lift the sleeping person up and out of their structure. These beds will make you feel “on top”, as the pocketsed coils and polymer grid create a lot of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing, Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. Now, you can decide if one or more of these mattresses are the right fit for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.

I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. The Purple Grid is great for helping you maintain a healthy spine alignment. It also feels amazing in relieving pressure. My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. Purple Hybrids will last longer due to the layers of innerspring coils. But heavier people may want to choose a different mattress. In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
Purples are more lively than the Casper Hybrids which might appeal to combination sleepers.
