This review will focus on the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattress. These beds include the company’s famous Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid and springy layers of pocketsed coils. I’ll admit, the specs certainly sound interesting, but are these beds comfortable? To find out, I reviewed these mattresses in depth. I assessed their build quality, comfort, and support for certain types of sleepers.

Are Purple Hybrids Good for You?
Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The original Hybrid uses 2 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses (you guessed it!) 4 inches.
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Back sleepers who like a firmer feel should like the original Purple Hybrid, and those who like a bit more pressure relief might prefer the Purple Premier 3.
Side sleepers could really like the Purple Premier 4, which offers a ton of cushioning around sensitive pressure points.
Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.
These beds are great for couples who want to sleep together. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
How Firm Are Purple Hybrid Mattresses
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. Referring to my height, I am 5’9″ and 125 lbs. I prefer to sleep on my side.
As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.
Purple Hybrids in the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be enjoyed by back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I gave this bed a rating of 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. I felt that it was medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It was able to provide pressure relief as well as support so that you can feel at ease in any of your sleeping positions.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 may feel good for combination sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress truly supported my pressure points, and gave me a great amount of sinkage. But I didn’t feel “stuckin” the mattress. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. This mattress is great for relieving pressure.
Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Before we wrap this section up, I want to note that all three of the Purple Hybrids had a bouncy, responsive feel. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. These are, in fact, some of the most comfortable mattresses available for combination sleepers. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 should be suitable for light-weight back sleepers. It will fill in the lumbar region for good pressure relief. You could also try one of the other hybrids.
The Premier 4 is a great option for light side sleepers. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.
Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Side sleepers with average weights – The Premier 4 mattress is the best for them. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers — The original Purple Hybrid should offer enough support to keep these people’s spines in a straight line. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for heavy sleepers (over 250lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is an excellent choice for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.
Heavy Stomach Sleepers: I would not recommend these beds to heavy stomachs sleepers. They need a firmer mattress to give them optimal support. One of our best mattresses for heavy people could be a better fit. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief and pain relief are closely connected. This refers to how well a bed is capable of relieving tension at the hips and shoulders. I use a pressure chart to verify this.
Though it sounds complicated, it’s actually quite simple: I roll this gizmo out, hop aboard, and let the map do the rest! The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based upon these pressure map results the original Purple Hybrid mattress is the best for those suffering from back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This shows me that the original Hybrid is keeping me evenly supported in my weight which is crucial for avoiding back discomfort.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure map is almost completely blue, which tells me sensitive hip joints will be cradled throughout the night. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples like beds that do not transmit motion, are comfortable for sex, and have excellent edge support. See below for how Purple Hybrids compare in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Given the bounce of these mattresses, it is not surprising to find that they do not offer motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Good motion isolation and enough bounce are two of the best qualities in a mattress for sex.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
Their mobility and lift could make them a great choice for you if your sleep is disturbed at night.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I would also say that they are some of the most cooling mattresses available.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. Great edge support can make your mattress feel a bit bigger, since you can spread out across its entire surface.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
What are Purple Hybrids Made From?
Next up, let’s get into what these beds are made of! Most of you will want to know more about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. Recall that all Purple Hybrids can be assembled the same way. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.
Cover All of these mattresses are covered with a breathable, stretchy polyester blend mattress protector.
Comfort Layer The hyper-elastic comfort grid is located below the cover. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel less pressure-relieving, the larger the grid.
A look at The Purple Grid.
Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer is the bulk of Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattress. It is made up of a section with pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. As the bed’s polymer grid and pocketsed coils create buoyancy, you will likely feel more “ontop” of them.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple offers complimentary white glove delivery for Hybrid Premier models. These beds are heavy. The original Purple Hybrid isn’t as hard to lift, but I’d still recommend having a friend nearby to help you unbag it. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.
Let’s now get to the final thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses. Now it’s time to make a decision about whether one of these mattresses is the right choice for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.
Purple Hybrid Mattresses: My favourite features
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
The Purple mattresses aren’t the most motion-simpliant. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
However, I would like to point out that some customers were unhappy with the original Purple mattress’s tendency of sagging or forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. You should place any Purple bed on a sturdy platform. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It

What is the difference in the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress and the original Purple Hybrid?
There is only one difference between these two mattresses: the amount of Purple Grid they are made with.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 2-inch grid grid layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 3 uses a 3-inch grid Layer. Purple Hybrid Premier 4 uses a 4-inch grid Layer.
Where are Purple Mattresses Made?
Purple mattresses are all made in the USA.
Can I use a mattress box with Purple Hybrids?
Purple doesn’t recommend using a Box Spring with any of its beds.
They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.
Purple Hybrid vs.
Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid, like the Purple Hybrids has foam layers and pocketed coils to provide pressure relief and support.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
The Casper is different from the Purples. It has zoned support. This means it is firmer in the hips but softer at the shoulders. This provides optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Is The New Purple Mattress Worth It
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive, firm, and buoyant. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is much cheaper than either Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier.
