In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds feature the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid as well as layers of springy pockets and coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Is a Purple Hybrid a Good Mattress for You?
Purple was founded 2015 and has been a household name ever since. Its innovative products and cheeky advertisements have helped make Purple a popular brand in the bedding market. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
Although they offer different pressure relief, the beds feel fairly similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
Side sleepers will love the Purple Premier 4 because it provides excellent cushioning for pressure points.
Stomach sleepers are likely to enjoy the supportive feeling that the original Purple Hybrid offers.
This mattress is cooling and should be loved by hot sleepers.
Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! How To Return Purple Mattress
Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses might not be for couples.
You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.
One of our best memory foam mattresses might be a better fit if you’re easily disturbed at night. How To Return Purple Mattress
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.
You can see that I thought each of the three mattresses had a very distinct feel. I will break them down below to give you my thoughts.
Purple Hybrids are ranked on the mattress firmness scale.
Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.
Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 – I gave this bed an 8.6 out of 10. It felt medium-firm to me. This mattress is ideal for combination sleepers. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could feel great for couples who are looking to sleep together.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This soft mattress really cradled my pressure points and offered a nice amount of sinkage. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers may like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we close this section, I’d like to point out that all three Purple Hybrids have a buoyant, responsive feel. These beds felt like I was more “on top of” the bed than “in it”. It was very easy to shift positions at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. How To Return Purple Mattress
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers — The Hybrid Premier 3 I think is a great choice for light back-sleepers. It fills in their lumbar regions to provide good pressure relief. And it is supportive enough for those with lighter bodies. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. How To Return Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids suitable for average-weight sleepers (130 – 250 lb), or are they not?
Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach Sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should be supportive enough to keep these folks’ spines in a neutral straight line. How To Return Purple Mattress
Are Purple Hybrids a good mattress for heavy sleepers (over 250 lb).
Heavy Back Sleepers – I would recommend this sleeper stick to the Premier 3 which is thick enough that it will last, but doesn’t feel too soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is a nice choice for heavy side sleepers. This mattress’ thick grid provides ample space for sinkage. Its soft feel should also be suitable for those with sensitive skin.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. The best mattress for heavy people might be one of our best. How To Return Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue areas indicate low pressure, while red areas indicate high pressure.
Pressure relief is a result of the Purple Hybrids.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is bright blue throughout, but does not gape around the lower spine like the Premier 3 & 4 maps. This tells me the original Hybrid is keeping my weight evenly supported, which is a key to avoiding back pain.
Shoulder pain Based on these findings, all three of the beds are great options for shoulder pain sufferers! To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.
Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. The pressure map of the Premier 4 is almost entirely blue, meaning that sensitive hip joints can be cradled throughout. How To Return Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Check out the Purple Hybrids to find out how they stack up in these areas.
Motion transfer describes the movement from one side or the other of the bed. This is a crucial factor for any sleeper, but particularly for those who share a mattress with a child or furry pet friend.
To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
Motion transfer results from Purple Hybrids.
Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This means that you will feel movement throughout the three mattresses. How To Return Purple Mattress
Best mattress for sex usually combines good motion isolation with enough bounce to make it easy to move around.
My personal opinion is that the Purple Hybrids can be a little too buoyant to share with light sleepers.
They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.
All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.
These beds should make hot sleepers happy. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.
This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. How To Return Purple Mattress
Edge support is a measure of whether or not you’ll be able to sleep all the way on the side of your bed and still feel supported. Because you can spread your weight across the entire mattress, great edge support can make your mattress feel larger.
All three Purple mattresses I tested had excellent edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personally, I thought that the Purple Premier 3 had some of the best edge support. How To Return Purple Mattress
What are Purple Hybrids Made from?
Let’s next look at what these beds are made out of. I know most people want to know more information about the Purple Grid layer. This is the purple top layer, which gives Purple mattresses their distinctive feel.
Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. All Purple Hybrids are made the same. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
Cover These mattresses come with a polyester blend mattress cover that is breathable and flexible.
Comfort Layer Located directly below the cover, you will find the hyper-elastic smart comfort grid made of polymer smart. This grid is very cooling and supportive. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The more grid you have, the more comfortable the mattress is.
A look at The Purple Grid.
Next, you will find a layer with poly foam. The transition foam acts to allow the sleeper to move down through the soft grid and onto the firmer pocketed coil below.
Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs have a high bounce and lift the body. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids all come in a box, but are actually packaged in bags! Purple delivers complimentary white gloves to Hybrid Premier beds because they are very heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should dissipate within a few hours.
Let’s get to the bottom of this review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that choice for you, I can share some final thoughts to help.
Purple Hybrid is one of my favorite mattresses
The Purple Hybrids are so cool! These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I also love how responsive the Purple Hybrid model are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It’s great for helping with your spine alignment. However, it is also extremely pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. The Purple is an excellent choice for those who want to experience a more distinctive feel. How To Return Purple Mattress
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses don’t have the best movement isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.
I also wanted to mention that some customers complained about the Purple mattress’s tendency to sag and form indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. If you decide to purchase any Purple bed, ensure you place it on a solid platform, not a box spring, and rotate it 180 degrees every few months to increase its lifespan. How To Return Purple Mattress

Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.
These experts recommend using a solid platform, slatted or adjustable bed frame.
Purple Hybrid Vs.
Let’s now take a deep dive into the Purple Hybrid Premier, and see how they compare with other mattresses you can find on the Internet.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrid is similar to the Purple Hybrids and combines foam layers with pocketed coils for support and pressure relief.
It has a more traditional feel than the Purple beds. This could be a good option for people who don’t like Purple’s unique feel.
For couples or back sleepers, the Leesa Hybrid is my recommendation.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Casper has zoned support. It’s more firm at the hips than the Purples. The shoulders are softer to provide optimal lumbar support.
The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.
The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. How To Return Purple Mattress
Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple
The Original Purple mattress supports are made of high density poly foam, not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. This may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
