In this review we will look at the Purple Hybrid Premier as well as the Purple Hybrid Premier. These beds feature the company’s iconic Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid plus springy layers of pocketed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Is a Purple Hybrid a good mattress?
Purple was founded in 2015 and has since grown into one of the most popular bedding brands on the market, thanks to a combination of cheeky advertisements and innovative products. It currently sells three kinds of hybrid mattresses: Purple Hybrid Premier 3, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 & Purple Hybrid Premier 4 The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 Hybrid uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches
These beds provide different levels of pressure relief but feel very similar. Take a look below to learn a little more about who each model might work best for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for
The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.
The Purple Premier 4 is a great option for side sleepers, as it provides a lot of cushioning around pressure points.
Stomach sleepers will likely enjoy the supportive feel of the original Purple Hybrid.
These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for
Purple mattresses are not for everyone.
Since they’re so bouncy, you’re likely to feel a partner tossing and turning at night.
One of our top memory foam mattresses might be a better option if you have trouble falling asleep at night. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
How Firm are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses?
Let’s next look at how these bed/in-a-box hybrids actually felt. Below, I’ll go over what it felt like to sleep on all three of the Purple Hybrid models. It is important to remember that feeling can be subjective and depend on your body type. Referring to the above, I am approximately 5’9″ and weigh 125 lbs.
As you can see, all three of my mattresses felt very different to me.
Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.
Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. This mattress has a firmer feel than the industry norm of 6.5 for medium-firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.
Purple Hybrid should be used by back sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier3: I gave this mattress a 6.5 on the firmness scale and it felt true to medium-firm. Combination sleepers, who frequently shift between positions throughout the night, and those with lower back pain or seeking a mattress to support sciatica, will love this bed. It offered pressure relief and support, which I believe could be used in any position.
Purple Hybrid Premier 3 can be used to combine sleepers.
Purple Hybrid Premier 4 – I scored this bed at 6 out 10 on the mattress firmness rating scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. The bed did not feel “stuck” to me. This mattress is recommended for side sleepers as well as side and combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.
Side sleepers will like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4
Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. I felt much more “on top of” than “in” these beds, and found it really easy to change positions at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Are the Purple Hybrids Good Mattresses for Light Sleepers (Under 130 lb)?
Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.
Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the way to go for these sleepers as well. Side sleepers will appreciate the pressure relief it provides.
Light Stomach-Sleepers – I recommend these people stick to the original Purple Hybrid. Their hips should be in line with their shoulders. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Are Purple Hybrids Good for Average Weight Sleepers (130 -250 lb).
Average Weight Back Sleepers: The Hybrid Premier 3 is great for those who are average weight. It combines pressure relief and support. It is ideal for people who move between sleeping positions at night.
Average Weight Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the best pick for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.
Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?
Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.
Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick grid layer allows for plenty of sinkage and the soft feel should make it comfortable for side sleepers.
Heavy Stomach / Back Sleepers – I don’t recommend these mattresses to anyone with a heavy stomach. These people need to have optimal support and a firmer mattress. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance
Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.
Although it sounds complex, it’s actually quite straightforward. I simply roll this device out, get on, and the map will do the rest. The device tracks the force my body exerts on the surface of the map as I move, and then creates a colored map showing the pressure. The blue areas denote low pressure while the red areas are high.
The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.
Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is uniformly blue, but it doesn’t show any gaps around the lower back as the Premier 3 and 4 maps. This indicates that the original Hybrid is maintaining my weight evenly supported. This is important in order to avoid back pain.
Shoulder Pain Based on these results, all three of these beds are great fits for sleepers with shoulder pain! They should do a nice job cushioning the shoulder area to relieve pressure.
Hip Pain is The Premier 4 for people with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Purple Hybrid Mattress Performances For Couples
Couples prefer beds that are quiet, responsive enough to sex and offer good edge support. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.
Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is important for all sleepers but especially for couples who share a bedroom with a child, furry friend, or other people.
To demonstrate motion transfer, I dropped an 10 lb steel ball, from three heights: 4 inches, 8 inch, and 12 inches. I measured the disturbance it caused. The bigger the lines, then, the more severe the disturbance.
The Purple Hybrids motion transfer results.
Given how soft these mattresses are, it’s not surprising that they don’t provide much motion isolation. I think this means you might feel movement across the three mattresses. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
A good mattress for sex should have enough bounce and motion isolation to be comfortable to move about on.
The Purple Hybrids seem a bit too soft to be shared if you aren’t a light sleeper.
If you don’t mind being disturbed at night, these guys could be great options for sex because of their mobility and lift.
All of the Purple Hybrids are incredibly cooling.
Any of these beds is suitable for hot sleepers. They are also among the most comfortable and cooling you can buy.
This is great news to couples who overheat more quickly than those who sleep alone. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Edge support can be described as the degree to which you are able to rest on one side of your mattress and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.
All three Purple mattresses were very supportive of the edges. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.
Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
What are Purple Hybrids Made Of?
Let’s see what these beds actually are! I’m sure you want to find out more about Purple Grid. This grid is the stretchy layer of purple that gives Purple mattresses their unique feeling.
I’ll describe the grid, and all the other mattress layers, in detail below. As a reminder, all of the Purple Hybrids are constructed the same way. There is only one difference: how many inches of Purple Grid each mattress uses.
All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.
Comfort Layer Below the cover you’ll find the hyper elastic polymer smart comfort layer. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. Although it is hard to describe how the polymer material feels, I liken it as a water bed. It supports and cradles you body as you move. The original purple Hybrid uses 2 inches of the Grid, while the Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches and the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.
A look at The Purple Grid.
The Transition Layer You’ll next find a layer made of poly foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.
Support Layer A section of pocketed coils makes up the bulk of the Hybrid Premier and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. In general, you’ll likely feel more “on top” of these beds as the polymer grid and pocketed coils produce a ton of buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing & Off-Gassing
Purple Hybrids come in bags and are not boxed mattresses. The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. These mattresses are a great option because they don’t emit a strong scent like other bed-in a-box models. The scent should disappear within a few hours.
My Final Thoughts about Purple Hybrid Mattresses Well folks, we’ve arrived at the end of the review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.
Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.
I am a huge fan of the Purple Hybrids’ cooling properties. These beds don’t trap any body heat so they should make most hot sleepers very happy. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.
Finally, the Purple Grid feels great. It helps you achieve a healthy spine alignment while still feeling incredible in pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. The Purple is a great choice if you want to try a different feel. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
My Purple Hybrid mattress complaints
Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. Although this isn’t a major issue, it can make your night more difficult.
A few customers have complained about their original Purple mattress becoming sagging and indentations. Purple Hybrids should be more durable because of the innerspring coil layers. Heavy people might consider a different type of mattress if this is an issue. For a longer life, make sure you put the Purple bed on a solid platform. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh

Purple Hybrid Vs.
After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.
Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid
The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.
Although it does have a traditional feel, it’s still more comfortable than any Purple beds. It could also work well for people who don’t want Purple’s unique feel.
In general, I’d recommend the Leesa Hybrid for back sleepers and couples.
Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid
Unlike the Purples, the Casper features zoned support, meaning it’s firmer at the hips and softer at the shoulders to offer optimal lumbar support.
Purples can be more bouncy than the Casper Hybrids, which may appeal to combination sleepers.
The Purple 3 or Purple 4 can be a bit more effective than the Casper Hybrid. How Much Does A King Size Purple Mattress Weigh
Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple
Support layers for the Original Purple mattress are made from high-density foam and not pocketed coils.
The Original Purple is supportive. It’s bouncy and firm. Combination sleepers might particularly like this feel.
The Original Purple mattress is similar to the Purple Hybrids and can be very cooling.
The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
