Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring – Our Purple Hybrid Mattress Review 2021

We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds are made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid, plus layers of springy pocketsed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?

Purple was founded by a group of cheeky ads and innovative products in 2015. It offers three hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 (Purple Hybrid Premier 3), and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (Purple Hybrid Premier 4). The only thing that differs between these beds are the amounts of Purple’s unique grid layer. The Premier 3 and Premier 4 use 2 inches each, while the Premier 3 and Premier 3 each use 3 inches. 4 inches

As a result, these beds offer different amounts of pressure relief, but otherwise feel pretty similar. Below is a list of who each model may be best suited for.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for

The original Purple Hybrid is recommended for back sleepers who want a firmer feel, while the Purple Premier provides a bit more pressure relief.

Side sleepers might like the Purple Premier 4 which provides great cushioning around sensitive pressure point.

People who sleep on their stomachs will appreciate the comforting feel of the original Purple Hybrid.

You will be able to sleep cool on these mattresses if you are a hot sleeper.

Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Couples might not like the Purple mattresses.

You’ll likely feel a partner turning and tossing in the night because they’re so happy.

If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses

Does The Purple Mattress Need A BoxspringLet’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below is a detailed account of how I felt when I slept on the three Purple Hybrid models. Feelings are subjective and will vary depending on your body type and preferred sleeping position. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.

As you can see from the graphic below I felt that all three mattresses had very distinct feelings. So I’ll break them apart so you can read my full thoughts about each.

Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.

Purple Hybrid. I found the Purple Hybrid mattress to be very firm and gave it a 7. It’s obvious that this mattress is more supportive than the industry-standard 6.5 for mediumfirmness. The polymer layer, which is thin enough support a healthy spine, would make this feel most appealing to stomach and back-sleepers.

Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. Combination sleepers who shift between different positions during the night as well as those with sciatica or lower back pain would benefit from this bed. It provided pressure relief and support in a way that could be comfortable in all sleeping positions.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier 4: I scored this bed as a 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The soft mattress was very supportive and cradled all my pressure points. However, the bed didn’t feel like it was “stuck in” to me. Side sleepers and side-combined sleepers would love this mattress. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.

Side sleepers will enjoy the Purple Hybrid Premier 4

Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds made me feel more “on top” of them than “in” them. It was also easy to move around at night. In fact, I’d say these are some of the best mattresses for combination sleepers on the market. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Are Purple Hybrids good for light sleepers (under 130 lb)

Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. They could also use any of the other hybrids.

Light Side Sleepers – The Premier 4 is the right choice for these sleepers. It provides great pressure relief which is essential for side sleepers.

Light Stomach Sleepers- These people should stick with the original Purple Hybrid. It will keep their hips in line with their shoulders. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?

Average Weight Back Sleepers-The Hybrid Premier 3 is a great choice for these sleepers because it offers both pressure relief as well as support. If you need to move around at night, it’s a good option.

Side sleepers who are average in weight – the Premier 4 is the best option for these sleepers. Its top layer of hyperelasticity polymer is thick enough to allow for pressure relief at hips and shoulders.

Average Weight Stomach sleepers – The original Purple Hybrid should support these people’s spines. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Are Purple Hybrids good for heavy sleepers (over 250lb)?

Heavy Back Sleepers — I would suggest these sleepers stick to Premier 3, which is thick and durable but not overly soft.

Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.

Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. It might be better to choose one of our top-rated mattresses for heavy persons. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief

Pressure relief is closely linked to pain relief. This is the measure of how well a bed can relieve tension at the hips, shoulders, and lower back. To test for this, I like to use a pressure map.

Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. The gadget records the force of my body on the map and gives me a colored “map”. Blue zones indicate areas of low pressure, and red areas of high.

The Purple Hybrids offer pressure relief.

Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. Although the map is blue all over, it doesn’t have a gap at the lower back like Premier 3 and 4 maps. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.

Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To relieve pressure they should do a good job cushioning the shoulder.

Hip Pain the Premier 4 is the winner for hip pain sufferers. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance for Couples

Couples will often choose beds that have good edge support, isolate motion transfer and are responsive enough to sex. Read on below to see how the Purple Hybrids stack up in those areas.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important factor for all sleepers, but especially for couples or folks who share a bed with a child or furry best friend.

To illustrate motion transfer, I dropped a 10 lb steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.

Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.

Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This tells me that there will be movement on all three mattresses. It could also mean that they might not be the best choice for couples, particularly if one of them is frequently disturbed at night. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Sex

The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.

If you are light sleeper, the Purple Hybrids may be too bouncey for you to share.

They could also be a good option for sex if you aren’t easily disturbed at night.

Cooling

The Purple Hybrids all have incredible cooling properties.

All of these beds will be comfortable for hot sleepers. They’re also one of the most cool mattresses that you’ll find.

This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Edge Support

Edge support measures whether you can sleep on your side and still feel supported. Your mattress will feel bigger if you have great edge support. You can spread your weight over the entire surface of your mattress.

All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer shrink under my body weight, but the foam below and coils were firm and supportive.

Personallly, I felt that the Purple Premier 3 offered the best edge support. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

What are Purple Hybrids Made from?

Let’s now get to the bottom of what these beds are made from! I’m sure most of you want to learn more about that special Purple Grid layer. This is the stretchy purple top layer that gives Purple mattresses their unique feel.

Below you will find detailed descriptions of the grid as well the other layers. The Purple Hybrids all have the same construction. The only difference is the amount of Purple Grid each bed uses.

All mattresses have a cover made of a stretchy, breathable polyester blend.

Comfort Layer Directly below the cover is where you’ll encounter the hyper-elastic polymer smart comfort grid. This grid is extremely cooling, buoyant, and supportive. It’s hard to describe the feeling of this polymer material. I would liken it to an incredibly soft water bed. It cradles your body while you move. The Hybrid Premier 3 uses 3 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 4 uses 4 inches. The more grid there is, the more pressure-relieving the mattress feels.

The Purple Grid.

Transition Layer Next you’ll find a layer poly foam. This transition foam allows the sleeper to slide through the soft top grid onto the more solid pocketed coil system.

Support Layer: The bulk of Hybrid Premier or Hybrid Premier mattresses consists of a section made of pocketed coils. These springs provide a lift to the mattress and are extremely buoyant. You will feel more “on top” of these beds because the pocketsed coils and polymer grid provide a lot buoyancy.

Purple Hybrids Unboxing and Off-Gassing

Purple Hybrids can be described as all-bed-in a-box mattresses but come in bags. Purple provides complimentary white glove delivery on Hybrid Premier models. They are extremely heavy. Although the original Purple Hybrid is easier to lift, I recommend that you have a friend to help with unbagging it. This mattress is not as strong in off-gassing as other bed-ina-box mattresses. Any scent should vanish within a few hours.

Let’s get to the bottom of this review. After reviewing every detail, it’s time now to make the decision about which mattress is best for you. Although I cannot make that decision for your, I can offer some suggestions to help you.

Purple Hybrid mattress are my favorite.

I love the cooling effect of Purple Hybrids. They don’t trap as much body heat, so anyone who is hot sleeping should be able to enjoy these beds. I like the responsiveness of Purple Hybrid beds. Combination sleepers won’t have any trouble changing positions on these beds.

I love the feeling of the Purple Grid. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. Particularly if you choose one the thicker versions. If you’re willing to test out a more unique feel I think the Purple might be a great fit for you. My Purple Hybrid mattresses complaints

Purple mattresses may not offer the best motion isolation. This is not a problem, but if you are constantly disturbed at night, you may want to consider a traditional memory foam mattress. It will absorb more motion.

I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. The Purple Hybrids are more durable due to the innerspring coil layers. However, heavier people might prefer a different mattress. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses

The only difference is how much Purple Grid each mattress is made of.

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has an original 2-inch grid layer. The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches grid layers. The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches grid layers.

Where are Purple Mattresses Made?

Purple mattresses made in America.

Can I use a box spring with the Purple Hybrid mattresses?

Purple recommends not using a boxspring with any of their beds.

They recommend using a solid base, a slatted bed frame or an adjustable base.

Purple Hybrid Vs.

Let’s have a look at Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. Then let’s compare their performance to other mattress models that you can find online.

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrids combine foam layers with pocketed coils to give you a double punch of support and pressure relief, just like the Purple Hybrids.

However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.

The Leesa Hybrid is a good choice for couples and back sleepers.

Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid

Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.

The Purples are bouncier than the Casper Hybrid, which combination sleepers might appreciate.

The Purple 3 (and Purple 4) are slightly more pressure relieving than the Casper Hybrid. Does The Purple Mattress Need A Boxspring

Purple Hybrids as compared to Original Purple

The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.

The Original Purple is firm, supportive, and bouncy. This may appeal to combination sleepers.

The Original Purple mattress, like the Purple Hybrids is extremely cooling. It could also be a good choice for people who sleep hot at night.

The Original Purple is cheaper than either the Purple Hybrid Premier, or Purple Hybrid Premier.
