Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring – Our Purple Hybrid Mattress Review 2021

We will be reviewing the Purple Hybrid Premier and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses. These beds have the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple grid along with springy layers made of pocketed coils. While the specs are interesting, these beds do not sound comfortable. Is a Purple Hybrid Mattress a Good Choice?

Purple was established in 2015 and has grown to be one of the most well-known bedding brands. This is due to its cheeky advertising and innovative products. It sells three different hybrid mattresses, the Purple Hybrid, the Purple Hybrid Premier 3, and Purple Hybrid Premier 4. There is only one difference between the beds: how much Purple’s grid layer is included in each. The Premier 3 uses 3 inches, the Premier 3 uses 3 inches, and the Premier 4 uses 4 inches. 4 inches

Although the pressure relief offered by these beds is different, they feel almost identical. Look below to find out which model is the best.

Who I recommend a Purple Hybrid for

The Purple Hybrid original is ideal for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. Purple Premier 3 might be more suitable for those who require a bit more pressure relief.

Side sleepers may like the Purple Premier 4, as it offers great cushioning around sensitive pressure points.

Stomach-sleepers will enjoy the support of the original Purple Hybrid.

These mattresses should be appreciated by hot sleepers.

Combination sleepers should enjoy the bouncy feel of these beds! Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Who I don’t recommend a Purple Hybrid for

Purple mattresses may not be for everyone.

Because they are so buoyant, you might feel your partner tossing around at night.

If you are easily disturbed at night, one of our memory foam mattresses may be better suited. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

How Firm is the Purple Hybrid Mattresses

Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box SpringLet’s now get into the actual feeling of these bed-in a-box hybrids. Below, I’ll describe what it was like to sleep in each of the Purple Hybrid hybrid models. Remember that feelings are subjective and may vary depending on how you sleep. For example, I’m 5’9″, approximately 125 lbs., and prefer sleeping on my side.

As you can see in the graphic below, I actually thought all three mattresses had pretty distinct feels, so I’ll section them off below so you can get my full thoughts on each one.

Purple Hybrids on a mattress firmness rating scale.

Purple Hybrid: I found this mattress to be quite firm, so gave it a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. This mattress’s support is superior to the industry average of 6.5 for medium firmness. I think stomach or back sleepers would benefit most from this feel, as the polymer layer is thin enough to support an even spinal line from hips to shoulders.

Purple Hybrids are great for back sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3: I gave this bed a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and felt it had a true medium-firm feel. I’d especially recommend this bed to combination sleepers who move between multiple positions in the night and those suffering from lower back pain or looking for a mattress for sciatica . It struck a really nice balance between pressure relief and support that I think could feel comfortable in most sleeping positions.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 could be comfortable for combination sleepers.

Purple Hybrid Premier #4: I gave it a 6 out 10. This soft mattress really supported my pressure points and allowed for a lot of sinkage. I did not feel “stuck-in”, however. This mattress would be a good choice for side or combination sleepers. These people will appreciate the pressure-relieving feeling of this mattress.

Side sleepers should like the Purple Hybrid Premier 4.

Before we end this section, let me say that the Purple Hybrids all had a lively, responsive feeling. These beds feel much more comfortable than they are “in” and I found it easy to adjust my position at night. These are the best combination mattresses on the market. Are Purple Hybrids Good For Light Sleepers (Under 130 Lb)?

Light Back Sleepers – I think the Hybrid Premier 3 is a great fit for lightweight back sleepers, it should really fill in their lumbar regions for some nice pressure relief, and is plenty supportive for lighter folks. These sleepers could also benefit from any of the hybrids.

For light side sleepers, the Premier 4 is the best choice. It offers great pressure relief, which is important for side sleepers.

Light Stomach Sleepers – I’d recommend these folks stick to the original Purple Hybrid, which should keep their hips lifted up in line with their shoulders. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Are Purple Hybrids Good For Average Weight Sleepers (130-250lb)?

Average Weight Back sleepers – The Hybrid Premier 3 is the perfect choice because it combines pressure relief with support. This is a great choice for those who need to change positions during the night.

Side sleepers of average weight – The Premier 4 is the best choice for these sleepers. The Premier 4’s thick top layer is made of hyper-elastic plastic and provides pressure relief at the hips and shoulders.

Average Weight Stomach – The original Purple Hybrid should have enough support to keep these people’s spines straight. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Are Purple Hybrids the Best Mattress for Heavy Sleepers (over 250lb).

Heavy Back Sleepers–I recommend these sleepers stick the Premier 3 because it is thick enough to last but not soft.

Heavy Side Sleepers — The Premier 4 can be a great option for heavy side sleepers. Its thick grid layers provide plenty of room for sinkage while its soft feel should be very comfortable.

Heavy Stomach Sleepers – I wouldn’t recommend any of these beds to heavy stomach sleepers, who need a firmer mattress to provide optimal support. This mattress is our top choice for heavy sleepers. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Purple Hybrids Pain Relief Performance

Pressure relief is closely related to pain relief. It is an indicator of how well a mattress can ease tension at the shoulders and hips. To check this, I use a Pressure Map.

Although it sounds complicated, it is actually very simple. I just roll the gizmo and then hop on the map. As I move around the bed, the gadget records the force my body’s exerting on the map, and makes a colored “map” of the pressure. Blue signifies low pressure areas, and red the high pressure areas.

The Purple Hybrids provide pressure relief.

Back Pain Based on these pressure map results, the original Purple Hybrid is the best fit for sleepers with back pain. The map is blue across the board, but doesn’t gap around the lower back the way the Premier 3 and 4 maps do. This is an indication that the original Hybrid is evenly supporting my weight, which is important for avoiding back pain.

Shoulder Pain According to these results, these beds are excellent choices for people suffering from shoulder pain. To alleviate pressure, they should do a great job of cushioning the shoulder region.

Hip Pain The Premier 4 is the clear winner for folks with hip pain. Its pressure maps are almost all blue, which suggests that the music will be played throughout the night to soothe sensitive hip joints. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Purple Hybrid Mattress Performance For Couples

Couples often prefer beds that isolate motion transfer, are responsive enough for sex, are cooling, and feature good edge support. Continue reading to learn how Purple Hybrids stack-up in those areas.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is the amount of movement detectable from one side of the bed to the other. This is an important consideration for anyone who sleeps with a child or furry companion, but more so for couples.

I dropped a 10-lb steel ball at heights of 4″, 8″ and 12 inches to illustrate motion transfer. The disturbance it caused was measured: the larger the lines, the greater the disturbance.

Motion transfer is a result of the Purple Hybrids.

Considering how bouncy these mattresses are, I’m not that surprised to see they don’t offer great motion isolation. This shows me that you are likely to feel movement on all three of these mattresses. This could make them less suitable for couples, especially if one is easily disturbed at night. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Sex

The best mattress for sex is one that has enough bounce and motion isolation to allow you to move easily.

Personally, I think the Purple Hybrids are a bit too bouncy to share if you’re a light sleeper.

However, if you’re not disturbed at night they can be good options for sex due to their lift-and mobility.

Cooling

All Purple Hybrids are extremely cool.

Hot sleepers should be happy on any of these beds. I’d say they’re also some of the best cooling mattresses you can find.

This is good news for couples who tend to heat up much faster than single sleepers. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Edge Support

Edge support refers to your ability to lie on one side or the other of your bed while still feeling supported. A mattress with great edge support will feel larger because you can spread it across its entire surface.

All three Purple mattresses provided good edge support. I could feel the Purple grid layer begin to compress under my weight but the foam and coils below were firm and supportive.

Personally, I thought the Purple Premier 3 had the best edge support of the bunch. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

What are Purple Hybrids Made from?

Let’s find out what these beds look like! You will be interested to learn more about the Purple Grid Layer. This purple top layer is what gives Purple mattresses their unique look.

Below is a detailed description of the grid and all other layers of the mattress. It is important to remember that all Purple Hybrids have the exact same construction. The only difference is how many inches of the Purple Grid each bed uses.

Cover All these mattresses come with a waterproof and stretchy polyester-blend mattress cover.

Comfort Layer Just below the cover is the hyper-elastic, smart comfort grid. This grid is buoyant, supportive, yet incredibly cooling. While it’s kind of hard to describe how this polymer material feels, I’d liken it to a water bed in that it cradles your body as you move. The original purple Hybrid has 2 inches of Grid, the Hybrid Premier 3 has 3 inches, and the Hybrid Premier 4 has 4 inches. The mattress will feel more pressure-relieving if there’s more grid.

The Purple Grid.

Next is a layer of transition foam. This layer of transition foam helps to ease the sleeper through the soft top grid into the more robust pocketed coil system.

Support Layer The bulk of both the Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses is a section of pocketed coils. These springs, which are very buoyant, help to lift the sleeper higher and further out of the structure. Because of the buoyancy of the pocketsed coils and polymer grid, these beds are more comfortable than others.

Unboxing and Off Gassing Purple Hybrids

The Purple Hybrids are all bed-in-a-box mattresses, but they actually come in bags instead of boxes! The Hybrid Premier models are very heavy, so Purple throws in complimentary white glove delivery with those beds. Although the original Purple Hybrid mattress is easier to unbag, I recommend having someone to help. The best thing about these mattresses is their lack of strong off-gassing smells compared to other bed in a box models. Any scent should disappear in a matter of hours.

Let me conclude my review on Purple Hybrid Mattresses. After going over every possible detail I could think of, it’s now time to decide if one of these mattresses is right for you. While I cannot make this decision for you personally, I can give you some final thoughts that will help you to make the right choice.

Purple Hybrid mattresses are one of my favourite things.

The Purple Hybrids are extremely cooling. They don’t trap much body heat at all, so I think most hot sleepers out there should be very happy on these beds! I also like how responsive the Purple Hybrid models are. These beds can be used by both single and double sleepers.

The Purple Grid’s feel is great. It does a great job of helping you achieve a healthy spinal alignment, but still feels incredible pressure relieving. Especially when you choose one of the thicker models. If you are willing to experiment with a more unique feel, I recommend the Purple. My Purple Hybrid Mattress complaints

I will say that the Purple mattresses don’t feature the best motion isolation out there. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, if you’re really easily disturbed at night you might want to opt for a more traditional memory foam mattress, which will do a better job absorbing motion.

I do also want to note that a few customers have complained about the original Purple mattress sagging and forming indentations. Purple Hybrids have innerspring coil layers that make them more durable. If this is a problem, heavy people might choose to switch to a different model. Place any Purple bed you purchase on a solid platform. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

What is the difference between Purple Hybrid Premier and Original Purple Hybrid mattresses

The only difference is how much Purple Grid each mattress is made of.

Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 3 have layers of 2-inch grid, 3-inch grid, and 4 inch grid, respectively.

Where are Purple Mattresses Made?

Purple mattresses made in America.

Can I use the Purple Hybrid Mattresses with a Box Spring?

Purple doesn’t recommend that you use a box spring in conjunction with any of your beds.

They recommend using a solid platform foundation, a slatted frame for a bed, or an adjustable base.

Purple Hybrid Vs.

After taking a deep-dive look at the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier mattresses, let’s see how they compare to other mattress models you’ll find on the online scene.

Purple Hybrids vs Leesa Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrids are similar to the Purple Hybrids. It combines foam layers, pocketed coils and support for one-two pressure relief.

However, it has more of a traditional feel than any of the Purple beds, so could work for folks who aren’t sold on Purple’s unique feel.

I recommend the Leesa Hybrid to back sleepers and couples.

Purple Hybrids vs Casper Hybrid

Casper, unlike the Purples, has zoned support. This means that it’s firmer around the hips and more comfortable at the shoulders.

Purples are a bit more bouncier that the Casper Hybrids. This is something combination sleepers may like.

The Purple 3 & Purple 4 relieve a little less pressure than the Casper Hybrid. Does A Purple Mattress Need A Box Spring

Purple Hybrids vs Original Purple

The Original Purple mattress’s support layers are made of high-density Poly foam, and not pocketed coils.

The Original Purple is supportive, bouncy, and firm. This is a great feeling for combination sleepers.

Like the Purple Hybrids, the Original Purple mattress is incredibly cooling, so it could be a good fit for folks who overheat at night.

The Original Purple is more affordable than the Purple Hybrid Premier or Purple Hybrid Premier.
